LRMS BACK TO SCHOOL LETTER
(This letter was mailed to Middle School parents/guardians on July 27, 2018)

Dear Middle School Parent/Guardian,

We hope you and your student have had an enjoyable summer and are eager for another successful school year.  This letter includes important information so that your student is prepared for a great year at LRMS.  The first day of school is Thursday, August 16th.  School begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m.  Friday, August 17th, and every Friday, school will dismiss at 1:35 p.m.  Supply lists can be found on the homepage of the district’s website, www.logrog.net

OPEN HOUSE will be held Monday, August 13th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   Parents and students can meet teachers, tour the building, and locate classrooms.  A parent orientation meeting will be held in the auditorium at 7:00 p.m. for seventh grade students and their parents.

CLASS SCHEDULES:  Some teachers and classes may have changed over the summer.  Therefore, the schedule enclosed may differ from the one that was sent home last spring.  If you have scheduling issues, please check with the counselor, Mrs. Byrom, preferably before or after Open House.

STUDENT INFORMATION UPDATE:  Please review the demographic information on the enclosed form and return it to the office only if changes are necessary.  It is important that we have the most current and accurate contact information to use during the school year.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH PRICES:  The cost for breakfast is $1.30, lunch is $2.55 (breaktfast and lunch prices were incorrect in the letter mailed 7/27), and extra milk is $.40.  Deposits to student meal accounts can be made during Open House and any time during the year in the office.  Menus are available on the website.

BUS ROUTES/PASSES:  Questions regarding bus routes and numbers can be answered at Open House or by calling the office.  Middle School students may ride a different bus other than the one rode in the past.  During the year, if students need to ride a different bus after school with another student, please call the office before 11:00 a.m. so that a bus pass can be prepared for the driver.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL:  Students arriving or leaving by car must enter and exit only at the east (behind tennis courts) and north (behind stadium) doors.  Please observe all “ENTRANCE” and “EXIT” signs.  During school hours (6:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m.), the drive located behind the school is one-way.  The drive in front of the school is for bus traffic only 7:00 a.m. to 7:35 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 2:40 p.m.  It is against the law to pass a bus while it is loading and unloading.

ARRIVING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY:  Students arriving late (after 7:40 a.m.) to school must sign in at the office.  Parents are required to sign out students in the office when picking up students early.  Only those listed on the student enrollment form will be allowed to pick up students.  If necessary, parents may give permission by phone for someone other than those listed to pick up their student.

TARDIES:  Students are allowed four minutes between classes.  (Students will NOT be counted tardy for the first few days after school begins in order to allow students to get acquainted with the building and their schedules.)  Being tardy five, unexcused times per quarter will result in Thursday School, In-School Suspension (ISS), or Zero Hour.  Arriving late to school constitutes a tardy.

ABSENCES:  Please call the office as early as possible when students are absent.  Students absent without parental consent are considered truant.  Students are responsible for completing all make-up assignments.  Assignments not made up will affect the student’s grade.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:  Homework assignments are available from the office upon request.

STUDENT RECORDS:  Student records can be accessed on the parent portal.  To set up an account, please email the parent/guardian name, student name, and school in which student is enrolled (Middle School) to parentportal@logrog.netInstructions and login information will be mailed to the parent’s/guardian’s home address.

PICTURES:  Individual student pictures will be taken Friday, August 31st.  All students will be photographed for the yearbook.  Information about picture packages available to purchase will be provided to students after school begins.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES:  Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held Thursday, October 18th.   Appointments can be scheduled by calling the school office beginning October 5th.

PROGRESS REPORTS/GRADE CARDS:  Progress reports will either be mailed or available to access online every three weeks.  First-quarter grade cards will be sent home October 18th.  Grade cards may be held at the end of each semester if a student is responsible for lost or damaged textbooks or library books, overdue lunch balances, lost sports equipment, or any fines or dues left unpaid.

LOST/DAMAGED BOOKS:  Students will be required to pay for books that are lost or damaged during the school year.

MEDICINE/ IMMUNIZATIONS:  Medications are required to be given to the school nurse with a “medication authorization release” form.  Immunization updates should be given to the school nurse.

LOCKERS:  All students have their own locker.  Locks are allowed, however, combinations or extra keys must be given to the office.

RANDOM DRUG TESTING:  All students in grades 7th through 12th who participate in extracurricular or co-curricular activities (such as athletics, band, choir, student council, speech and drama, science, and FCCLA) will be subject to random drug testing.  Each student who participates in extra-curricular/co-curricular activities will be assigned to a pool of approximately 250 students.  Random drug testing will take place twice a month, with five students being randomly selected each session starting in September.  The testing will take place in the school nurse’s office through a urine specimen.  The utmost respect and confidentiality will be taken.  During the seventh grade parent orientation meeting, information will be given to the students and parents regarding random drug testing.  Consent forms will also be available to allow participation in after-school activities.  Eighth graders who signed a consent form last year will not need to do so again this year.

ATHLETICS:  Current physical exams (less than a year old), insurance information, and a signed copy of the “Athletic & Activity Policy Handbook” are required to participate in athletics.  Please plan to pick up students on time after tryouts and practices.

Cheerleading information will be provided at a later date.

Cross-Country practice will begin after school Thursday, August 16th until 4:00 p.m.  Friday, August 17th practice will be held at 7:00 a.m.

Football practice will begin Tuesday, August 14th and Wednesday, August 15th, 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.  Once school begins, Thursday, August 16th, practice will be held after school until 5:00 p.m.  T-shirt, shorts, and shoes should be worn for practice.

Volleyball tryouts will be Thursday and Friday, August 16th and 17th.  Attending both days is required.  Seventh graders will stay after school in the gym and try out 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Eighth graders will try out 2:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We look forward to working with you to make this school year a successful educational experience.  Please call the Middle School office at 753-2896 if we can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,
